Barcelona Boqueria Boy/Girl Bike Chic

November 16th, 2008 | written by : finn

Snapped this outside Barcelona's Mercat de Boqueria, according to the Guardian "possibly the best market in the world". Think I got robbed at Bar Pinotxo shortly afterwards on langoustines but they were sublime.

Broadway Market Cycle Chic

November 15th, 2008 | written by : finn

Late breakfast at Broadway Market today : Vietnamese coffee and a falafel wrap. It's a fashion parade down there and a Mecca for cycle chic spotting. Am still criplingly awkward putting my camera in people's faces but got a few shots I'm happy with. Above's a shot into Lock 7 a cycle cafe where you can have a drink, some cake and get your cycle repaired or just browse the accessories and hip second hand bikes on display. Its got a view down onto Regent's Canal or out at the passing cyclists laden with organic veg et al. The shop opened in April 2008 and was apparently inspired by a trip to Copenhagen - no surprise there.

Plenty of shabby chic ladies bikes being walked around here as well as a few new Bianchi cruisers, Pashleys, Bronxes, Electras, Raleighs and custom fixies. Wicker baskets are de rigeur for carrying groceries and the more designer boutique bags you can hang off your handlebars the better.

Emo punk chic is big around here and here's some early proof that Hackney does heels on bikes (plenty more seen btw but not quick enough on the trigger I'm afraid).

The fate of cars left too long around here . . . the end is nigh my gas guzzling friends.

President Barack Obama is Your New Fixie

November 5th, 2008 | written by : finn

Was up most of the night with my eye on the polls. After listening and relistening to Obama's "This is our moment" acceptance speech I'm feeling genuinely hopeful that this new dawn of American leadership beckons an enlightened sense of global direction and ideology. He was gracious and thanked many, including campaign manager David Plouffe. The success and excitement of the campaign was in part due to the use of new and innovative methods to inspire the young and disengaged. Shephard Fairey, the "Obey" artist behind the iconic HOPE portrait was part of this, as were the founders of the Obama spokecard campaign.

ANIMAL brought Geekhouse bike builder Marty Walsh together with pattern reworking genius Dan Funderburgh to create a ONE OF A KIND fixed wheel ObamaBike that was auctioned on Ebay and sold for $1,425. It wasn't the only fixie homage to President Obama . . .

To a crowd of 75,000 in Portland Oregon this May, Obama called for the nation to get serious about it's energy issues and model Portland's investment in bicycles and alternative means of transportation, making him the only candidate to specifically mention investment in bicycle infrastructure. Now that he's president, I'm sure, in time, Americans can expect innovative lateral thinking as well as real progress on this issue.
